From the East and the West people come to enjoy the special qualities of Thailand's capital city. Since the 1960s Bangkok has been a major tourist destination and much development has resulted directly from those coming to experience the myriad delights of this exotic city. It is place where heritage is prized and, in contrast, where modern art and technology suffuses much of local life.

But the city is also the political and financial center of Thailand, making it an important South-East Asian locale. Over the last few decades it has seen significant growth and those who come to enjoy one or more of its many colorful sides, can experience a stay without equal. First and foremost, you'll be struck by the wonderful service which is something of local trademark. Even if your wallet doesn't allow for a room or suite in one of those grand places of modernism which boast four or five stars, you'll still be treated to typically attentive service. The city was once a port town which endured much colonial influence, and this has carried over into the current attitude to provide upscale accommodations and the kind of hospitality which has become something of a rarity in the West. Whether on business, an exotic escape or a family vacation, there is something for everyone and just the place to provide you with access to everything you could possibly need or hope to find. You don't have to spend an arm and leg on a presidential suite to get the best out of the city but if you do dole out the extra monies for the regal treatment, you'll be in for a stay which defies expectations.

Some come to visit for a short while before heading off to less cosmopolitan areas like Phuket, but those who stay and hope to experience the city to the full, will be able to visit sites like the Grand Palace, or any one of the famous Wats, which is the Thai word for temple. Aside from the nightlife and the endless culinary delights, you only have to ask at your front desk about local attractions, and there are far too many to count. Stay in one of the upscale, contemporary accommodations and you might be tempted to stay indoors and not venture beyond the entrance. This, of course, is a mistake of proportions equal to the grandness of your hotel. But it must be said that having a haven of comfort and leisure is not to be underestimated.

Choose a luxury hotel and you're likely to have a magical bar on the roof, perhaps next to the over-sized swimming pool which provides that ever-essential marine reflection of the stars of the Asian sky. Enjoy gourmet food almost everywhere. It's often said of the city that the tricky thing is finding food that isn't delicious. Within the authentic Thai culinary repertoire, there is quite a variety of regional flavor and many different dishes, so take your time sampling the local cuisine. Your hotel will have a good restaurant, if not one which is revered far and wide. As delightful as the local food may be, there are those who, when they travel, have a moment of nostalgia for Western cookery. If you're ever in the mood for a filet mignon, a pizza or even a hamburger, you'll discover than many hotels have both European fine dining and more casual eateries which cater to guests looking for something more familiar.

Shopping is one of the great pastimes for Bangkok's tourists, and few don't want to be close to Ratchaprasong, which is considered one of the foremost shopping areas in Asia. Siam Square, which retains the city's original name, is a hive of retail therapy. And you'll find easy access from most parts of the city. Public transport is fast and effective. Take the skytrain or the underground and get around easily. Alternatively, your hotel will be able to book taxis and trips. Just ask about the numerous distractions and areas of interests. Dive deep in the beautiful sea and dry off under the tropical sun on one of those magnificent sandy beaches. The Buddhist Temples are always worth a visit as are the World Heritage Sites and the unique collection of plant and bird life.

With tourism being a major factor in the local economy, you're not likely to find the top-bracket hotels skimping on anything. Business guests will have a full array of appropriate services and facilities, while all guests will appreciate the extras like free- wifi and large flat screen televisions. Suvarnabhumi Airport caters to those arriving in the east and there are many quality lodgings only a short drive away. The same can be said for Don Muang Airport which is found in the north and is the other main point of entry for visitors. However you hope to enjoy this famous city, there are a wide range of rooms to suit every budget and taste.
