A Guide to Nightlife in Bangkok
Oct 19 , 2011
Bangkok has one of the most vibrant nightlife scenes in Asia. There are shows, bars, live music, and cultural experiences galore. There are also more adult interests, for those who want to choose that avenue. Whatever you seek, nightlife in Bangkok will surely be memorable.
See a Cultural Show
Nightlife in Bangkok isn’t all about bars and music—you’ll find many opportunities to spend your night in cultured settings, experiencing the city’s arts. In Ratchadaphisek, for example, you’ll be able to see Siam Niramit, in which the history of each region of Thailand acted out in truly spectacular fashion. In this show, more than 150 performers assemble on what is often cited as the world’s biggest stage, bringing guests into the nation’s past with a mesmerizing 80-minute performance.

Go Dancing
What would nightlife in Bangkok be without music? Bangkok has some of Asia’s hippest clubs, and they regularly attract top DJ talent from around the globe, bringing in trendy, dance-ready patrons for all-night parties. Some bars also feature live music, including jazz, traditional Thai music, and even the occasional American chart-topper. Nightlife in Bangkok is heavily influenced by music, and there are many places to go out dancing.
Go to the Movies
A trip to the cinema is a popular activity in Bangkok, and tickets are much cheaper than they are in the U.S. (around four or five USD). Because movies are so popular, cinemas have had to compete for crowds, and most have very modern, comfortable theatres, as well as new Hollywood releases.
Kids especially enjoy seeing American-made movies, and they allow for a nice break from the dramatic cultural change. Seeing a Thai movie is a great way to enjoy the nightlife in Bangkok, and don’t worry about language barriers – most movies have English subtitles.
The Bangkok Red Light District
You can’t talk about nightlife in Bangkok without (at least briefly) discussing the city’s red light districts. If you’ve come to Bangkok looking for some adult fun, Bangkok has three well known areas that will interest you.
The city’s most famous red light district is Patpong, which was what originally earned Bangkok its reputation as a destination for carnal pleasure. If you’d like to branch outside of Patpong, head for Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy, both of which are located on Sukhumvit Road.
Here, go-go dancers will lure you into clubs and bars to check out lurid performances, and possibly entice you into paying for an even closer look. The red light districts are not for everyone, and there are certainly more wholesome elements to nightlife in Bangkok, so don’t let the presesnce of Bangkok red light districts discourage you from exploring other parts of the city.
